Athletic Republic delivers on-field success through our unique combination of science-based performance training protocols, proprietary equipment and technology, and the education and experience of our highly qualified trainers.

Our low athlete-to-trainer ratios enable our trainers to focus on each athlete’s technique to ensure correct movement patterns, improve their overall efficiency, reduce the chance for injury, and provide a positive mentoring role that helps athletes learn what it takes to be successful.

Matt

Director of SportsLab

Matt Walsh is an Australian-trained physiotherapist with 37 years of clinical experience in sports and orthopedic PT. Specializing in endurance trail and track running related pain and performance, Matt has worked with professional and recreational athletes from all over the world . He has held positions with the USA touch rugby, Canadian Nordic ski team & Nike Oregon project. He holds advanced certification in sports physiotherapy, teaches internationally, and is the co-director of both Sportslab & the Portland Tendon clinic.

As an educator, he teaches regularly to physical therapists and doctors throughout the USA, Canada, and Spain on tendon pain, exercise, and running related care. As well, Matt leads a health professional running special interest group and a strength and conditioning class for runners.

Jerod

Owner

Jerod Cottrill is a sports medicine physician who has practiced in Portland for over 20 years, and continues to practice at Rebound Orthopedics and Neurosurgery. He did his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago/Northwestern University followed by a fellowship in interventional spine and sports medicine at the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch. He has been a leader in advancing the area of musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnostic and interventional uses across the US, serving as teaching faculty with several organizations, as well as works closely with a local fellowship program, mentoring sports medicine fellows. He has been on the medical pool for the US Ski and Snowboard team since 2008, and a lead physician with the USA Nordic since 2011. He is also a team physician with the Portland Trail Blazers. Jerod has been named a Portland Monthly Top Doc 14 times for Sports Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has been recognized nationally by US News and World Report and Castle Connely as a leading physician in his field.

Jerod also understands athletes, as a prior Academic All-Conference football player and Senior Scholar athlete in college. He remains passionate about backcountry skiing, nordic skiing, and cycling, and remaining healthy and fit enough to continue these pursuits for years to come.

Our Highly-Qualified Trainers

Our trainers are passionate professionals who bring together extensive knowledge, specialized backgrounds, and hands-on experience to deliver extraordinary training experiences for both competitive athletes and fitness-minded adults.

Their expertise spans from advanced sports performance protocols to personalized fitness coaching, ensuring every client receives the guidance they need to achieve their specific goals.

Our training team’s credentials are impressive across the board. Many have competed or coached at high levels in various sports, while others bring extensive experience in adult fitness and conditioning.

Most hold professional certifications (CSCS, ACSM, NASM) and/or degrees in exercise science, biomechanics, or athletic training. Additionally, our sports performance trainers complete Athletic Republic’s three comprehensive certification levels in biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise science, and program adaptation.
